SUMMARY OF DUTIES
This position is responsible for providing efficient and reliable support to in-house Tort Claims Litigation attorneys and Claims professionals in claims and claims litigation in a team environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Work with in-house counsel, Claims, Human Resources, Operations, and other groups regarding the collection and maintenance of evidence and discovery materials related to litigation brought under the Federal Employers' Liability Act (FELA) and related federal laws and regulations, and other personal injury and property damage claims and litigation brought by business invitees, passengers, contractors, pedestrians and motorists at railroad crossings, trespassers and other third parties.
• Assists Claims personnel and in-house and outside defense counsel in responding appropriately to interrogatories, requests for production, requests for witnesses, and other discovery; identifies, assembles, and organizes corporate information, materials and databases for use in Amtrak's defense; assists in developing corporate responses to discovery; as needed, works with Claims personnel to conduct necessary in-house investigation for relevant defense information, rules, witnesses, documents, etc.
• Supports the efforts of Claims, in-house counsel, and outside defense counsel retained to represent Amtrak in civil trials and other proceedings, in order to ensure that such representation is both effective and cost-efficient.
• As needed, prepares and maintains working files for legal team, including summaries, memoranda, and status reports concerning pending litigation and litigation issues.
• Organizes files for off-site storage, as well as active file maintenance.

• Prepares responses to third-party subpoenas.

• Prepares routine motions or legal responses, as requested.

• Assists with collection of materials to respond to FOIA requests.

• Assists in preparing, implementing, and managing litigation holds.

• Additional duties as required and as abilities progress.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's Degree or Paralegal Certificate

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Must be able to work in a busy environment and prioritize and manage multiple ongoing matters

• Ability to work effectively and professionally with internal clients and outside counsel.

• Ability to work with a variety of personalities in a strong team environment

• Strong attention to detail

• Excellent organizational, research, and analytical skills

• Excellent prior job performance

• Ability to manage a heavy workload

• Ability to organize and analyze large volumes of information and documents

• Ability to work under pressure and meet constant deadlines

• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

• Coordinate multiple cases and projects and adapt to changing priorities

• Effectively manage and utilize Amtrak's financial resources

• Availability to travel as needed

• Proficient with MS Office Applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience working with railroads or other industrial environments with extensive personnel policies, labor agreements, and discipline processes.

• Experience working in the transportation or insurance industries.

• A minimum of two years of relevant experience working in a law firm or corporate legal department environment

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
